How to Cancel a Planet Fitness Membership

Planet Fitness is a fast-growing franchiser of fitness centers. They pride themselves on providing a non-judgemental, welcoming environment for their members. It is very easy to obtain a membership to Planet Fitness, however, similar to other gym chains, it is not so easy to cancel! Instead of being able to cancel online, you have to either go to your home gym in person or send a certified letter to cancel.

They seek to set themselves apart from other gyms by offering a welcoming, non-judgemental environment, clean facilities, and low enrollment and membership fees. Many have found Planet Fitness to be a good fit for their fitness needs and goals. 

What are the different Planet Fitness membership plans?

Planet Fitness gyms are over 95% independently owned and operated, so there are some minor differences in their memberships depending on location. However, for the most part they offer two levels of memberships, the Classic Membership and the PF Black Card Membership:

What are the membership fees?

What is the Planet Fitness cancellation policy?

There are many reasons you may be wanting to stop your Planet Fitness membership.

Because locations are independently owned and operated, cancellation policies can vary from club to club, Planet Fitness recommends you start by contacting your home club to confirm their cancellation policy.

For most locations, you either cancel in person or you send them a letter requesting to cancel. 

How do I cancel my membership manually?

Most Planet Fitness gyms will require you to either cancel in person or in writing.

How to Cancel in Person

1. Visit your home Planet Fitness club. 
2. Ask them to provide you with a Membership Cancellation form. Fill it out and return it to them.
3. Ask them to confirm the cancellation when complete via email so you have a confirmation for your records.  

How to Cancel in Writing

1. Write a letter requesting to cancel your membership. You do not need a specific form.
2. Include this information in your letter:
   1. Your full name
   2. Date of birth
   3. Email address
   4. Address
   5. Phone number
   6. The last four digits of the credit card on file
   7. Planet Fitness Membership ID number

4. Send the letter by certified mail to your home gym’s address. 

When should I cancel my membership to avoid the next Monthly Membership Fee?

Planet Fitness charges the Monthly Membership Fee on or around the 17th of each month. To avoid paying the next month’s fee, the written request must be received (either in person or by certified mail) by your home club by the 10th of the month. It may take up to seven business days for the membership and billing changes to take effect. 

When should I cancel my membership to avoid the Annual Membership Fee?

To avoid the Annual Membership Fee, they must receive your cancellation notice no later than the 25th of the month before such billing. You can find your Annual Membership Fee date in your Member Agreement. It may take up to seven business days for the membership and billing changes to take effect. 

Is there a way to cancel my membership online?

Currently, you cannot cancel a Planet Fitness membership online. Planet Fitness asks that if you have questions regarding their cancellation policies you either contact your home club or call the Member Services Department at (844) 880-7180. The department is open Monday-Friday, 9am to 6pm EST.  

Why is it so hard to cancel a Planet Fitness membership?

It can be confusing to cancel a Planet Fitness membership because each gym is independently owned and operated. There is no centralized membership service or customer service. To save time and hassle, for the most part, all questions regarding membership should be asked at your home club. 

Can I pause my Planet Fitness membership instead of canceling it?

Yes, according to Planet Fitness, you can “freeze” your membership instead of canceling it. However, you can only freeze your membership if you can’t use the club because of illness or injury. Your home club will put your membership on hold for a determined length of time. If your membership had a 12-month commitment, the length of the membership is extended by the length of time it was held.   

Are there any refunds when cancelling my Planet Fitness gym membership?

No, currently Planet Fitness gym memberships are non-refundable.
